weaving in the ends: 2 finished knits!

I love finishing off things.  I think it's great to use up the last bit of yarn, empty the shampoo bottle, check things off my list and I just adore it when someone finishes off the last of the leftovers.  You know what I mean?  But I've noticed that I tend to put off the finishing when it comes to my knitted items.  All that weaving in of the ends turns me into a procrastinator first class.  Kristyn is right though, it's really not that big of a deal to finish off a project.  And today, I knocked off two items!
This is the Marley hat from Itty Bitty Knits is for our sweet friend Gabe.  I started it in February and just finished the last of it today.  (there were tons of ends to weave in!)  Gabe isn't able to regulate his body temperature and therefore he wears hats a lot of the time. They help to keep him warm and happy!  I knit this out of cotton yarn thinking it would be perfect for spring and summer and the cotton also makes it perfect for his mom to throw it in the wash when needed.
John Samuel modeled it for me with the emphatic request that I not show his face!  {It's too bad, because he's just so cute!}  I made the 2 years and up size and cast on 88 stitches.  It made quite the large hat.  {Rachel, you might need to shrink it first!} I used Tahki Cotton Classic yarn and some Lion Brand Cotton Ease.  It was great because I could use up some of my leftover yarn!  The original hat has a knitted topper that I decided to omit.  I liked it enough without all the extra hoopla that the topper added.
I also finished another girlfriend scarf.  I took this with me to the HSPN tournament in Lychburg and only knit on it in the car going and coming.  I finished it watching March Madness here at home!  It's knit with two yarns held together: one strand of Rowan Kidsilk Mohair and one strand of Koigu merino wool.  I love the subtle color changes, it's just enough to keep things interesting.
The Girlfriend Scarf is a fast and easy travel knit because there's no counting or concentrating...just seed stitch the entire length of the scarf until the koigu runs out.  When I finished I had this much yarn leftover from the koigu and the kidsilk.
They just belong together don't they?
 Happy Spring!  Happy Finishing!

Lisa, I love the hat! Thank you so much! It looks so roomy and comfy, I can guarantee you Gabe will get lots of good use out of it. If it doesn't fit just yet, he will definitely grow into it. He just outgrew size 5 and is now in size6/7! Ay, yi yi!

Oh and I can totally relate about the finishing off things. I thought I was alone on this, but I LOVE being able to throw away and empty shampoo bottle or toothpaste... glad to know you're right there with me.

Love you!

When I work with many colors, I finish the ends as I go whenever possible. On your hat, for example (if the pattern stitch allows), I bring the end ofg the new color in about 10-12 sts before the previous color ends. I knit over and under the strand to anchor it. Then I cut the previous color, and continuing with the new color, knit over and under the strand again until it runs out. finishing ends is my least favorite part of knitting and crocheting. I do that whenever I knit in the round. Knitting a sweater in pieces is different because you can hide the ends in the seam. When I do intarsia I finish the ends as soon as the particular motif is finished.

Ooo... love that yarn "nest" at the end! WONDERFUL knits, Lisa... Love that "smoky! Girlfriend. All the colors and texture on the at is terrific--it looks so cozy! It is always great to finish a project, no matter how big or small. I've got two larger knit projects on the needles, slow, going but such fun. Oh and speaking of fun--I got my napkin package from Courtney yesterday, and she got mine too this week. Loved this napkin swap! :o) Happy Day ((HUGS)))

They both turned out wonderful--and that scarf looks so yummy! I feel the same way about weaving in ends--it might as well be another project all by itself! I'm going to have to try some of these tips about weaving in as you go.

How nice to be able to cross two more projects off the list. And making that hat for Gabe is a thoughtful thing to do -- I'm sure it's appreciated and will bring a warm feeling all-around knowing it was made with love. Hats off to you.

I'm using up yarn too and trying out some new patterns which is always fun. Maybe we can try to get together in the next month.

I love to finish things up as well although I procrastinate at finishing up my sewing projects! I always wonder why when I am done as I get such satisfaction looking at the finished product.
Your knitting looks great - I really wish I could knit!

Not only are your projects finished - but they are beautiful! Love all the colors in gabe's hat - how fun! And your girlfriend scarf looks so soft and luxurious! (even though seed stitch and i aren't the best of friends right now)

I'm totally with you on finishing things off and getting them out of the way - and my husband could tell you that i have been known to toss the last bits of his soap. i can't help it, just feel cleaner to me.
